Questions
Costs
How much does it cost to make an audiobook of my book?
There’s a long and short answer to this, so let’s start with the short… If you know your book length by word count, pop straight over to our Audiobook Production Calculator and we’ll send you a free, instant and no obligation estimate to give you an idea.
The longer answer is ‘it depends’ because this can be influenced by many things. For example, who you choose to narrate your book, if you need studio time… where the studio is located, how quickly you take to narrating, if you require a copy editor before you start the process… etc. We have written a very handy blog aptly titled ‘How Much Does It Cost To Create An Audiobook‘ that covers all this off for you.
Are studio costs included in the audiobook production estimate?
Yes and No.
‘Yes!’ if you use one of our professional narrators. This is because there is a very high likelihood that they already have a professional studio that they use. This is already included in the audiobook production estimate we send you.
But ‘No’ if you are self narrating. This is because we will need to find you a suitable studio that is close by, and studio prices vary from area to area, country to country.
Why is the cost of my estimate the same for using a professional narrator versus me self narrating?
As you’d expect, a professional narrator will need less time prepare and record your book. This in turn required less supervision time from your producer, and allows for an easier edit and proofing process. So, although a professional narrator can be viewed as an extra over you narrating your own book, the time they save you and us in the production process balances out the extra time we would spend to help you prepare, narrate and produce your book.
What can change between the estimate and the final quote?
Your word count may change. We see this a lot if your book contains a lot of visuals that you then have to remove and replace with a description. (If this is you, we’ve written a blog that you may find handy… ‘Adapting Visuals For Audiobooks‘.) You may change your narrator or decide to use studios. You may also have some special requirements that you ask us to accommodate.
Does the audiobook production estimate include VAT?
Yes. Your audiobook production estimate will include VAT at the prevailing UK rate. If you are an overseas (not based in the UK) author, there are some limited circumstances where VAT will not be charged to you. We will delve into whether this applies to you in your circumstances within our Discovery phone call and reflect our conclusion within the detailed quote we will provide you.
How much does it cost to hire a studio?
This is genuinely one of those questions that we have no straight answer for. And that’s because this will depend largely on where you are based in the world (studio rates vary enormously from one country to another), along with what region of that country your chosen studio will be in. However, if you do require a studio, no matter where you are, rest assured that we will do the leg work to find one in your preferred area that meets all the right recording standards.
Do you have a payment plan?
Yes. We have 2 ways for you to spread the cost of creating your audiobook. A 2 part payment where you pay half on signature of your audiobook production contract and half just before we deliver your mastered audiobook files. We also have a 3 payment plan where you can pay one third on signature of your audiobook production contract, one third just before we start recording and the final third just before we deliver your mastered audiobook files. All payments are made by bank transfer.
The Process
What isn’t included in the audiobook production?
Copy editing and / proof reading, along with anything needed to turn your manuscript into one that can be narrated, studio hire (if required), design of your audiobook cover art, distribution and marketing your audiobook.
Do you have the rights to make your audiobook?
If your book has already been published by a publisher, you will need to check your contract to see if they own the audiobook publishing rights to your book. They can own them even if they haven’t made, or don’t intend to make, an audiobook of your work. If you do not own the rights to produce an audiobook, you may be able to enter into negotiations with the person or entity that does to release them.
We recently spoke to the lovely Will Doherty, a Chartered British and European Patent Attorney & Director at Albright IP, about Your Rights As An Author in a recent webinar. You can watch by signing up to our free Audiobook Community here.
Will you distribute my audiobook for me?
Unfortunately, no. But there are some great audiobook distribution platforms around for you to choose from. Take you time and do your research on this as each one has different renumeration and distribution strengths and weaknesses. Once you do find the distribution platform you would like to go on, we will happily virtually sit with you to help you upload your audiobook so that you’re ready to go.
To help you with your distribution platform decision, we spoke to Jason Manske from Book.io and Andrea Johnson from Troubador Publishing in a recent webinar. You can watch it by signing up to our free Audiobook Community here.
Can I narrate my own book? / I’ve never narrated before, but I’d really like to. Can I?
You absolutely can! And we’d love it! We will right up front have a chat about whether you’re up to, and able, to narrate and we will guide you through the whole narration process. We’re very used to working with self narrators, so you’ll be in safe hands 🙂
Our book is co-authored. Can we both narrate it or do we have to pick one of us to do it?
You absolutely can both narrate your book. We’ll help you divide the book into sections for you each to read. This has the added bonus of you getting to share the narration load with your fellow author. It will really help preserve your voice during the recording sessions, as well as halve the recording sessions you need to attend.
I don’t want to narrate!
No problem at all! We will have a good chat at the beginning of your audiobook production to explore the kind of voice you’d like to narrate your book. Then we’ll set about finding you some brilliant professional narrator options for you to choose from.
Can you use A.I. to generate my voice so I don’t have to narrate it?
One thing the human voice has over A.I. at the moment is it’s ability to emote and put emphasis in the correct places. That is why, for the best results, we will use you or a narrator to read your book. With your permission however, we will use an A.I. to help fix what we small ‘pick ups’. These are little stumbles / slips of the tongue that occur during the recording. This means you won’t have to go back into studio, which will save you both time and money.
Can any type of book be made into an audiobook?
Mostly. Though picture books / comic style books or books with a lot of visuals like tables and graphics would need adaption to get an audiobook ready script.
We’ve written a blog called ‘Adapting Visuals For Audiobooks‘ that can help you out.
I don’t live near you…
Not a problem! We do our meetings virtually and communicate via email. If you are using our professional narrator service, we’ll find the right narrator for your book and will work with them to deliver your audiobook with minimum fuss. And if you decide to self narrate, we will work to find a studio that is near you, even if you are in another country.
How long does it take to make an audiobook?
We would say somewhere in the vicinity of 6-12 weeks after we agree to work together. The timeline depends on a few factors, some of which are: How ready your manuscript is for recording, when you or your chosen narrator are available etc. We’ve written a blog called ‘How Long Does It Take To Create An Audiobook‘, which you may find useful.
What if I’m unhappy with any part of the process?
We’re passionate about making your audiobook production experience as smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free as possible. But if something doesn’t go to plan, we want to hear about it quickly so we can make it right.
